Architecture

The project consists of converting a 270m2 industrial warehouse into a space with two main uses:
1) temporary accommodation intended exclusively for groups of people.
2) organizing and promoting events (cultural, social, marketing, etc.).

The initial strategy was to try to reconcile these two realities by creating common areas for housing with a sufficiently strong character and materiality to serve both purposes.

The project thrives on the confrontation between two disparate geometries that occasionally seek dialogue with each other: there is a sequential rhythm, subordinate to the structural logic of the industrial warehouse and which creates the private rooms, and a set of circular spaces, tangent to each other and with variable dimensions, which give rise to the common use spaces.

Despite the apparent perception of disorder between the circular spaces, they create a permanent visual axis with the River Tagus and provide different uses depending on their relationship and size. In other words, from the outside of the city to the inside of the warehouse, the circles are gradually smaller and the intimacy of the spaces follows the reverse logic.

The result of the relationship between the two geometric systems creates a typology of rooms that generally follow the same spatial patterns, although they acquire their specific character depending on their encounter with the adjacent circular zones.

As far as materiality is concerned, the same logic was followed of creating distinct environments where the common areas and the private areas complement each other. The former are totally open and in dialogue with the industrial environment due to the use of raw sheet metal, with undefined tones and stains. On the other hand, the bedrooms have a very controlled scale and a serene atmosphere with their white walls and exposed solid wood beams. All the rooms have their own sanitary facilities, the infrastructure of which runs along the walls of the warehouse, and skylights that guarantee lighting and ventilation as well as allowing fragmented contact with the roof of the original warehouse.

When the space is only used for events, access to the rooms will be forbidden and the circular areas will have the necessary autonomy to interact with each other and, of course, with the view of the River Tagus and the industrial areas located directly opposite.
